Summer's Here

General

We just celebrated Memorial Day, a day we honor the men and women who serve our country. Memorial Day is also the unofficial start of summer. The time we enjoy warm and sunny weather and have lots of outdoor fun. We go on picnics, playing outside with our friends, head to the beach, or go to family cookouts. But while we have fun, we should also continue to look out for the environment.

Did you leave anything but tracks at your last picnic? Did you or a friend throw paper wrappings or a cola can onto one of our highways? Did you catch a grownup being irresponsible? You might think a can or bottle left lying on a beach or in a park is not going to hurt the environment, but if everyone thought that way, then our parks and beaches would be littered with trash. Check out this scary fact: Every day, the U.S. produces enough trash to equal the weight of the Empire State Building. That’s a lot of bottles and cans. So do the responsible thing and take the time to put bottles and cans in recycling bins.

Make notes in your Sasquatch Ideal Book on things you can do to help the environment. You could talk to your parents about setting up a recycling area in your home. Go online and find out about recycling centers in your town (go to http://earth911.com/). Think about doing something with your friends like picking up litter in your neighborhood. We know you’ve got great ideas.

Got a great story or photo about how your family or friends are living a greener life? Share them with us. We’d love to hear them. Sasquatch likes to keep a great story going!

And don't forget the sunscreen!
